The Buckeye Group Process: A Five-Step Approach to Growth
Experience has shown us that there are reliable commonalities to business growth, regardless of industry. Using our own clientele as the baseline for case studies, we’ve become clear about how to support a founder’s vision with varying levels of depth and investment. Often, an owner or founder doesn’t see strengths that already exist. We highlight what is working as much as what needs more support.
Some clients engage with The Buckeye Group for the time it takes to complete each of these phases, because the need is urgent and focused. Others may take some time to digest our Step One Intensive, circling back to The Buckeye Group in several months to continue the process. We are flexible to each owners needs and circumstance.
1
Intensive
A day-long session dedicated to identifying the ultimate vision of the founder, the current business as it stands today, future projects or business unit creation, and very importantly, the daily operational and financial barriers that stand between the status-quo and higher revenue.
This intensive day requires preparation in the form of financial reports, employee lists and other materials. Our goal is to remove the obstacles standing in the way of creative output and build structure around immediate shifts to make a meaningful difference, with efforts to ensure short-term and long-term profitability.
2
Implementation
The results of our day-long Intensive (with pre and post meeting analysis) are the to-do list of the implementation phase. The Buckeye Group is often tasked with guiding this process because it is heavily reliant on systemic changes that lay the groundwork for the future business.
This phase is scoped in collaboration with a business owner based on the resources of the company and number of employees, which means that every company will need something slightly (or very) different.
3
Assess Risk
It’s hard to take future risks if we don’t understand resources and comfort levels. In this phase we identify what (or who) is needed to realize a “next” phase of the business. The personal reserves of the business owner are investigated here with clear-sightedness about the personal versus business assets.
This phase is committed to how we put the wheels in motion for the next dream, while earmarking ample support for the company and individual.
4
Allocation
We’ve identified leaks in the system and fixed them. We’ve calculated and forecasted the numbers and begun course-correction. Human and capital resources have been reviewed, adjusted and possibly reorganized. The founder’s time has also meaningfully shifted to reflect the best use of talents and relationships. Now, it’s time to allocate and prioritize resources to “fertilize” the change.
It is often said “you have to spend money to make money,” which for some, is one hallmark of this phase. What we’re aiming for here is leveraging our previous work to allow for growth.
5
Revenue and Action
At this completion stage, we’re seeing the fruits of our labor – revenue has increased, people are in the right place, systems are functioning optimally – and we’re ready to actively build the scalable model / new business entity (or whatever mission was brought to Step One and Three.) This is “go time” as “next” manifests into reality.
This is also a time of appreciation of how far the business has come since the Intensive. Often, creative entrepreneurs feel radically more in control of their businesses and futures and are intrinsically happier because their time has been reallocated according to highest use of skillset. This reassurance is matched by increased revenue and (finally) the markers of growth.
